71% of air pollution in Georgia is caused by car emissions. 80% of vehicles are small cars which have not been inspected since 2004. 73% of vehicles are 16 years old or older, which consume more fuel and cause more air pollution. Most cars do not have a catalytic converter, which increases emissions 10 times for each car. Georgian fuel standard does not meet European standards. Fuel quality is checked by importers, not by the State. Poor urban planning also promotes traffic congestion which increases air pollution. Eco-driving habits could save drivers 20% on fuel and also help reduce air pollution.
