6 years after August War - Speaking Stones edition '6 years after August War' portrays how Gori, Georgian town affected by 2008 Russia-Georgia War, has been healing war wounds. On the 7th of August 2008, as a response to South Ossetian separatists shelling Georgian villages, Georgia launched a military operation against separatists and in a few hours recaptured Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway South Ossetia region. The next day, Russia openly joined the conflict by deploying non-peacekeeping armed forces and launching a full-scale military operation into Georgia. After 5 days of fierce fighting, Russia occupied the separatist regions of Georgia as well as cities controlled by the Georgian government, including Gori and Poti. As a result of diplomatic actions and European Union’s negotiations, a cease fire agreement was reached on the 12th of August. In the following weeks, the Russian armed forces retreated, though not completely leaving Georgian territory, even 6 years later. More than 230 civilians were killed from Georgia’s side during the war, including one foreign citizen. A Dutch cameraman, Stan Storimans was killed on the 12th of August during cluster bombing in the centre of Gori. 26,000 Georgians living in the Tskhinvali region lost their homes and became internally displaced persons.
