Ethnic Minorities in the South Caucasus - For this story, JumpStart visualized attitudes towards ethnic minorities in the South Caucasus. Regionally, Georgia is the most ethnically diverse country with 16% of its population consisting of minorities. The infographic shows the attitudes towards and among ethnic groups as well as suggesting possible explanations behind those attitudes. The visualization also contains quotes from an interview with Shorena Kobaidze, Eastern Partnership Minorities Network Programme Coordinator in Georgia, recorded on January, 2015. - To What Extent do you agree with the following statements? (%) A. People from other ethnic groups are enriching the cultural life of our country B. the presence of people from other ethnic groups is a cause of insecurity C. The presence of people from other ethnic groups increases unemployment Quote about Azerbaijan: Quote about Azerbaijan: “This number may not be accurate because the Armenian minority is afraid to reveal its identity in Azerbaijan” Attitudes The presence of people from other ethnic groups is a cause of insecurity: “In Armenia and Azerbaijan, ethnic minorities do not make up a majority of any region and as a result are hardly perceived as a separate group.” The presence of people from other ethnic groups increases unemployment: “The existence of organizations that protect and lobby the rights of minorities often increases the sense of injustice among the majority, which think that their rights are not equally being protected.” People from other ethnic groups are not enriching the cultural life of our country: “In Armenia and Azerbaijan, the number of minorities is so small that most people are not aware of their existence.” In Armenia and Azerbaijan, the number of minorities is smaller compared to Georgia, as well as issues minorities face are less visible, therefore often majority is not aware of their existence.
