Men in Paternity Leave - Current Georgian legislation allows parents employed in the private sector to share 730 days of unpaid parental leave. While an employer and an employee can agree on additional payment during the parental leave, only a mother receives a one-time assistance of no more than 1000 GEL from the government. In civil service, 183 days of fully-paid parental leave can be shared between a mother and a father. However, according to the requested data, during the last 18 months in 19 Georgian ministries, parental leave was used by 211 women and no men. The reason for this could be existing cultural norms, fear of losing their job, non-supportive legislation or stigma. In order to encourage dads and overcome the stigma, some countries have introduced mandatory paid paternity leave. In 2 years since Germany made 2 out of 14 months of parental leave mandatory for fathers, the percentage of men taking paternity leave went from 3% to more than 20%. According to the World Bank data on mandatory paid leaves in 143 countries, 139 countries, including Georgia, have maternity leave, while only 64 countries have mandatory paid paternity leave, which Georgia does not. In collaboration with Article 42 of Constitution, JumpStart Georgia studied and visualized Georgia's current policy on shared parental leave and why it is important for a mother and a father to share parental leave. -
